Roblox Introduces Kids and Teen Account Tiers to Strengthen Child Safety

0

The number of kids and teens in the gaming world continues to grow, and Roblox has found a new way to change how they interact online. The company is starting to roll out new age-based account tiers so younger users can be matched with players closer to their age in an attempt to better control who they interact with.

Through this change, users aged 5 to 8 will be placed into “Roblox Kids” accounts, while those from 9 to 15 will fall under “Roblox Select.” All older users will remain on standard Roblox accounts. Their age and placement will be determined through Roblox’s existing age-check system or through parental input, while the account tiers will also automatically adjust as users grow older.

What Each Tier Actually Changes

Those with Kids accounts will only have access to games considered appropriate for their age, and chat features will be turned off by default. Although parents can still enable limited communication settings if they want to.

Select accounts, on the other hand, are less strict. They offer broader content access and communication features, which gradually unlock depending on the user’s age.

This global rollout is expected to begin in early June this year.

Stricter Rules for Developers Too

These changes are not only for users but also for developers. Developers creating games for younger audiences are now held to a higher bar. Identity verification is required, security standards are stricter, and games have to clear additional review checks before they can reach kids and teens on the platform. The responsibility doesn’t just fall on users anymore; it falls on the people building it, too.

Why This Is Happening Now

Roblox has been under real legal pressure after multiple U.S. state attorneys general have filed lawsuits over concerns about young users being exposed to inappropriate content and harmful interactions. These new account tiers are a direct response to that heat. Whether they actually hold up is a different question, and one that won’t be answered until the system is tested in practice.
