With the launch of the iPhone Pocket—a limited-edition luxury accessory designed in collaboration with Issey Miyake—many Apple enthusiasts couldn’t help but draw parallels to the iconic iPod Socks. Although these two products cater to completely different markets, the timing and styling sparked curiosity among fans. Interestingly, Apple unveiled the iPhone Pocket just one day after the iPod celebrated its 24th anniversary.
This coincidence naturally raises the question: Could Apple bring back the beloved iPod for a special 25th-anniversary edition in 2026? According to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, in his “Power On” newsletter, such a move seems unlikely. Historically, Apple rarely resurrects entire product categories, particularly when consumer habits have evolved so drastically over the past two decades.
Nonetheless, Gurman acknowledges the nostalgic appeal it could have for a younger generation—kids who missed out on the original iPod era but would love to experience a taste of that classic technology.
Reimagining the iPod with Modern Technology
Essentially, an iPod revamped with today’s technology would resemble the iPod Touch—a device that offered nearly every feature of the iPhone, minus the phone capabilities. Given Apple’s current product lineup, releasing a standalone iPod would seem redundant. Yet, for nostalgia seekers, there are some exciting alternatives.
One notable option is PlayerMods, a company that allows users to customize authentic iPod Classics with modern features like Bluetooth, USB-C ports, faster SSD storage up to 2TB, and even AirTag tracking. They also offer unique custom colors and transparent shell versions, merging vintage design with contemporary tech enhancements.
Alternatively, fans can explore the second-hand market on platforms like eBay, where classic iPods remain cherished collectibles. These approaches might be the best way to relive iPod memories, as Apple appears unlikely to release a new iPod model—even to commemorate a milestone anniversary.
